About the Workshop

I left my previous employment as BBC Wales Head of Graphic Design with a career spanning over 25 years, to become a full-time professional artist and sculptor.  Since this time, my work has principally been inspired by my passion for the sea and its magical coastline.

In particular, I am fascinated by the various textures of ragged rocks and the shapes of beautifully formed pebbles, some of which may be resting in rock pools, while others find themselves imprisoned in deep crevices, perhaps never to escape!

Based on this theme, I initially produced a highly successful series of paintings.  The scenes were of attractive formations of rocks and pebbles with strong shadows created by low lying sunlight.

These paintings provided me with the stimulus to physically produce my own rocks and pebbles which formed the basis of the wall sculptures.  I realised that by working in three dimensions I could realistically emulate textures and handcraft precise shapes.  Also, the shadows produced with appropriate lighting, created incredible depth which, in turn, brought the sculptures to life.

By experimenting with a vast range of materials, I successfully developed the sculptures to make them light enough to hang safely on a wall.

I believe that I have not only achieved total realism with my work by emulating the natural beauty of the beach – but also the desire to touch!
